I am one of them. Motor Trend does, too. I’m also not fond of the transmission it’s attached to.

It doesn't. How it is supposed to work is as follows: You move the lever either forward or back, depending on what gear you want, and then you hold the lever until it selects the gear you want.
It's basically a 3 position switch that returns to it's original position in between selecting gears. We had one in a 300 rental, and it had a bad habit of jumping gear positions. It was a bit startling the first time it happened, but then it just became annoying. Reverse was the worst, where it would either select neutral or park, and take a little bit of fiddling with it to actually get reverse.
